Nestled in the northwest corner of North Dakota, Williams County offers visitors a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience the thrill of snagging a paddlefish. Known as a bucket list activity for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts alike, snagging for paddlefish on the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers provides an unforgettable adventure for all skill levels. If you're planning a trip to the Williston area, here's everything you need to make the most of your paddlefish experience.
What is a Paddlefish?
A paddlefish is one of North America's most ancient and fascinating fish species. The prehistoric giants are characterized by their long, paddle-shaped snouts and can weigh more than 100 pounds. Unlike traditional fishing methods, catching a paddlefish requires anglers to snag these large fish using heavy-duty rods and tackle—making it a thrilling and physically demanding experience!
When and Where to go Snagging for Paddlefish
The season in Williams County opens May 1 and lasts until May 21, or when the harvest quota is met. Timing is everything! The season can close within days depending on the number of fish caught. Snagging is allowed during the regular season from 7 am to 7 pm (Central Time). Sunday, Monday, and Thursday are reserved for snag and release days, with Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturdays being for harvest—they do make for good eating. Be sure to check the
North Dakota Game and Fish Department's website for up-to-date season dates and regulations.
The confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers near Williston is the prime location for snagging a paddlefish. Snagging is not permitted from a boat; you must be located onshore to cast your rod. Anglers typically go to the
Confluence Campground and
Ryder Point to set up camp or hang out for the day.
What You Need to Bring
To have a successful paddlefish adventure, make sure you pack the right gear:
- Heavy-duty fishing rod and reel: Paddle fish can be MASSIVE and require strong equipment!
- Snagging hooks: These are essential for the unique method of catching paddlefish.
- Fishing license and paddlefish tag: These can be purchased through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website.
- Wagon or cart: These fish can be large and awkward to transport from shore to your vehicle or cleaning station. A cart or wagon can make it easier!
- Sunscreen and protective clothing: The May sun can be intense, so come prepared.
- Waterproof shoes or mud boots: Late April and early May can be on the rainy side in Williams County, ND. Since snagging is required from shore, it can get a bit muddy! Make sure you have the right footwear to safely traverse mud and rocks.
- Plenty of water: Potable water may not be readily available at the Confluence Campground or at Ryder Point. Be sure to bring plenty of your own.
Tips for a Successful Paddlefish Trip
- Arrive early: The best spots fill up quickly, especially during opening weekend.
- Follow regulations: Ensure you are familiar with size limits, tag requirements, and other regulations to keep your experience legal and ethical.
- Keeping your fish: If you snag a paddlefish on a harvest day, you are required to keep the fish -- no culling. North Star Caviar provides fish cleaning services at the Confluence cleaning station in exchange for the row.
- Make plans ahead of time for where to stay: If you are visiting from out of the area, have a plan in place for where you will be spending the night. Camping at the Confluence Campground, Trenton Lake Recreation Area Campground, and Ryder Point is all first come, first served, so have a game plan and arrive early.
