Visit the historic site of Fort Buford, a military installation best known as the place where the Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull turned over his rifle in 1881. It was built to protect land and river routes traveled by settlers moving west. Explore the reconstructed Fort Union Trading Post which dominated the fur trade on the upper Missouri River from 1828 to 1867 for John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company. The fort was a place for peaceful trade with the Assiniboine, Cree, Crow, Blackfeet, Ojibwe, Hidatsa, Mandan, Arikara and Sioux tribes. While here, don't forget to take a selfie at the state line marker between the parking areas!
