The location of modern-day Williston was bound to play an important role in history. This is where the Yellowstone River completes its 692-mile journey from Yellowstone National Park, flowing into the mighty Missouri River. This confluence of two of America’s greatest rivers has brought people together for centuries for commerce and trade.
Visit the historic site of Fort Buford, a military installation best known as the place where the Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull turned over his rifle in 1881. It was built to protect land and river routes traveled by settlers moving west. Learn about the “Buffalo Soldiers” who served here and tour the original site to see a stone powder magazine and officers' quarters which now house a museum.

Explore the reconstructed Fort Union Trading Post which dominated the fur trade on the upper Missouri River from 1828 to 1867 for John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company. The fort was a place for peaceful trade with the Assiniboine, Cree, Crow, Blackfeet, Ojibwe, Hidatsa, Mandan, Arikara and Sioux tribes. While here, don't forget to take a selfie at the state line marker between the parking areas!
